| Barley yellow dwarf is the most widespread virus disease of wheat worldwide. In Virginia, surveys of small grains detected BYDVs in most wheat fields. When a wheat plant is infected with BYDV in the fall, when the plant is young, grain yield is reduced by approximately 30% compared to nearby healthy plants. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

The source of virus inoculum can be local, distant, or both. Aphids acquire the virus by feeding on an infected host plant and then migrating into the cereal crop. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
